Ecology + Justice + Culture in the American South

JUNE 11, 2020 – NEW ORLEANS, LA: Hoppers striking from Metro Services Group, a New Orleans’ garbage collection company, gather in the parking lot of Winn-Dixie on Chef Menteur Highway after standing water from Tropical Storm Cristobal flooded the Metro yard. Hoppers—workers who hop on and off garbage trucks to collect 250,000 lbs of the city’s waste each week—are essential workers in the time of coronavirus and are currently striking to demand PPE, hazard pay, and a living wage. Hoppers working for Metro demanded safety measures against COVID-19 but instead were fired and replaced by prison labor. They have been striking since May 5. (Photo by Katie Sikora)
